The University Grants Commission (UGC), a regulatory authority responsible for maintaining the standards of higher education in India, has issued a recent notification regarding the presence of counterfeit universities. The UGC has released a comprehensive list of 20 fraudulent educational institutions operating in different states across India, with the highest concentration being in Delhi, where eight such institutions are located.
This list comprises universities from a variety of states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The primary purpose of this list is to assist in the identification of these fake universities and to raise awareness among students and parents about their existence.
In an official letter directed to the Vice-Chancellors of these institutions, UGC Secretary Manish Joshi stated, “I would like to inform you that your institution figures in the list of fake Universities, as the institution is not a ‘University’ within the meaning of Section 2(f) or Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, but engaged in the business of conferring degrees or using the word ‘University’ with its name to defraud and cheat innocent students by awarding fake degrees. It has become a matter of concern as many students are becoming victims of the fraudulent act of your institution.”

UGC has provided explicit instructions to the respective states, urging them to take necessary actions against these deceptive universities. Furthermore, the commission has corresponded with the State Government’s Department of Higher Education and Principal Secretaries, requesting them to take appropriate measures against these illegitimate establishments from deceiving students and compromising the quality of education. The goal is to ensure that students have access to legitimate and reputable educational institutions that adhere to established standards of quality and credibility.
The repercussions of pursuing education in a counterfeit university can be severe. Graduates from such institutions will not obtain recognised degrees, potentially rendering them ineligible for jobs requiring a legitimate college degree or limiting their earning potential. They may also encounter challenges in pursuing further educational endeavours.
Additionally, students attending fake universities may find themselves expending time and money in vain. These illegitimate institutions often levy substantial tuition fees without delivering quality education and students may also be subjected to charges for services they never actually receive.
